Research at NEMESYS Lab: Pioneering Micro-Nano Solutions

At NEMESYS Lab, led by Dr. Gonzalo Murillo at the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM, CSIC), we operate at the cutting edge where nanomaterials, energy harvesting, and cell biology converge. Our work focuses on creating intelligent micro and nanosystems that address critical challenges in energy and healthcare.

1. Advanced ZnO Nanomaterials & Nanosheets

Our research has pioneered novel methods for the hydrothermal synthesis of two-dimensional n-doped ZnO nanosheets. By using AlN seed layers as promoters, we have developed a reproducible way to grow planar nanostructures with high aspect ratios under mild conditions. This work, published in high-impact journals like Nano Energy, explains the complex crystal growth mechanisms and unlocks new potential for piezoelectric applications.

2. Energy Harvesting & Industrial Translation

We are dedicated to transforming lab-scale breakthroughs into real-world technology. A cornerstone of this effort is our patent for a monolithic silicon-integrated piezoelectric energy collector. This innovation led to the founding of Energiot Devices SL, a CSIC spin-off and award-winning deep-tech startup. Our technology enables smart microgenerators that power the next generation of IoT devices for energy industry leaders globally.

3. Bioelectronics: The Cell-Nanogenerator Interface

Wireless cellular stimulation through piezoelectric impulses.

Recognized by the MIT Technology Review (Innovator under 35), our pioneer research uses nanogenerators to create localized electric potentials that modulate human cell activity. We have demonstrated that piezoelectric ZnO nanosheets can generate electrical impulses from the inherent motion of cells, activating calcium gates in osteoblast membranes. This paves the way for «electroceuticals»—bioelectronic medicines that treat diseases via targeted electrical impulses without external power sources.

4. Hybrid Nanogenerators & Wave Energy

Collaborating with top-tier international institutions in Korea and China, we investigate hybrid structures like PVDF-ZnO and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Our work explores harvesting energy from wave motion and water displacement, applying these sustainable energy solutions to flexible substrates and «electronic skin» sensors.

5. Bioelectronics: Scalable & Remotely Actuated Microdevices

The NEMESYS Lab continues to evolve from exploratory science to engineering-oriented bioelectronic systems. Our latest work (2025-2026) focuses on ultrasound-actuated piezoelectric microdevices for wireless cellular stimulation. These scalable platforms allow us to selectively excite cells within tissues remotely, reinforcing the translational potential of self-powered bioelectronic systems for regenerative medicine and muscle-based bio-bots.
